Go to http://www.inspiredlife.ca/announcements/stop_bill_c51_rally_video to watch the rally from May 10, 2008 at Queen’s Park.

On April 8th, 2008, the Canadian Minister of Health introduced Bill C-51 into the House of Commons. This Bill proposes significant changes to the current Food and Drugs Act that will have wide-ranging negative implications for all Canadians. This bill has already passed second reading. It appears that our Government is trying to fast track this bill before anyone has a chance to challenge it.

Photo: book cover of In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan

This book is fascinating, memorable and probably–besides being a “best-seller” currently–a “must read”: Michael Pollan’s In Defense of Food.

I’ve been “listening the book” to this book on CD. For eye-weary (by the end of the day) graphic designers like myself, “talking books” are great! (But, of course, you can read the hardback, if you prefer.)

We are in “Big Doo-Doo” nutritionally-speaking and health-wise in North America. What we’re eating (and NOT eating) plays a mega-huge part in that!

Here are excerpts from the book’s introduction:

“Food. There’s plenty of it around, and we all love to eat it. So why should anyone need to defend it? Because most of what we’re consuming today is not food, and how we’re consuming it — in the car, in front of the TV, and increasingly alone — is not really eating. Instead of food, we’re consuming “edible foodlike substances” — no longer the products of nature but of food science….

But if real food — the sort of food our great grandmothers would recognize as food — stands in need of defense, from whom does it need defending? From the food industry on one side and nutritional science on the other….

Pollan [the book’s author] proposes a new (and very old) answer to the question of what we should eat that comes down to seven simple but liberating words: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants. By urging us to once again eat food, he challenges the prevailing nutrient-by-nutrient approach — what he calls nutritionism — and proposes an alternative way of eating that is informed by the traditions and ecology of real, well-grown, unprocessed food. Our personal health, he argues, cannot be divorced from the health of the food chains of which we are part….

In Defense of Food shows us how, despite the daunting dietary landscape Americans confront in the modern supermarket, we can escape the Western diet and, by doing so, most of the chronic diseases that diet causes.”

Before “listening” to this book, I don’t think I fully grasped how much damage the food industry AND nutritional science have done both to our planet and to the health of so many people. All the “who, what, whys, hows and whens” are covered. Have a read–or a listen

sunlight book

Photo: front cover of “Heal Yourself with Sunlight” by Andreas Moritz

Do you think sunlight causes skin cancer? That sunscreens protect you from ultraviolet radiation? That sunglasses protect your eyes? Then, think again!

These are ALL myths, and you can thank the pharmaceutical industry, “Big Pharma,” for perpetuating these myths worldwide. Why? To sell products of course. Big Pharma could care less about your health except for you to have less of it, so more “products” can be sold to “fix you.” A little cynical, perhaps, but also FACTUAL.

There is “NO proof whatever that sun exposure cause skin cancer.” In fact, “it has been known for several decades that those living mostly outdoors, at high altitudes, or near the equator, have the lowest incidence of skin cancers.” Also, “melanoma (skin cancer) has to a large extent ‘grown’ to (so-called) epidemic proportions because of statistical manipulation (by ‘vested interests’ aka the pharmaceutical industry).

Scientific evidence underlines the FACT that sunlight is essential for good health, of your skin, of your whole body! Sunlight is “completely harmless unless we expose our bodies for unduly long periods of time.” Our bodies KNOW when to get out of the sun–UNLESS sunscreens interfere!

And what’s in sunscreens? Chemicals, many of which adversely affect health. Example: PABA (a common ingredient in sunscreens) “causes increased genetic damage to the DNA in skin cells during exposure to sunlight.” Naturally, “Big Pharma” gives a different spin.

But here’s a surprise: “Sunlight is most beneficial for those who eat a balanced diet….but dangerous for those who live on a diet rich in acid-forming, highly processed foods and refined, polyunsaturated fats. Alcohol, drugs, and other vitamin and mineral depleting substances can also make the skin vulnerable to UV radiation.”

Let’s hear it for ORGANIC, UNprocessed, vitamin and mineral rich foods!

So, take OFF those SUNGLASSES! Let the light in! Sunlight is GUARANTEED 100 percent ORGANIC, and guaranteed absolutely ESSENTIAL for your HEALTH.

For more eye-opening (sunglasses free) facts, check out HEAL YOURSELF WITH SUNLIGHT. This book will have you questioning a whole lot of previous “beliefs” about sunlight and health!

“Head’s Up”! More tricks and deceptions from the food industry. What’s in your soup? Your drinks? No MSG? “Less sugar”? It’s ALL just “spin.” This article is a MUST READ: “Secretive Chemicals Hidden in Food under “‘Artificial Ingredients’.”

Photo: DVD “The Future of Food”

This is another “Must See!” documentary. The Future of Food.

This is an excerpt from Dr. Mercola’s online newsletter:

“There is a revolution happening in the farm fields and on the dinner tables of America — a revolution that is transforming the very nature of the food we eat.

THE FUTURE OF FOOD offers an in-depth investigation into the disturbing truth behind the unlabeled, patented, genetically engineered foods that have quietly filled U.S. grocery store shelves for the past decade.

Shot on location in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, THE FUTURE OF FOOD examines the complex web of market and political forces that are changing what we eat as huge multinational corporations seek to control the world’s food system. The film also explores alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.

Created by Deborah Koons Garcia and Lily Films, The Future of Food is the first of a series of documentaries Lily Films plans to produce dealing with the current issues influencing our food, environment and agriculture.

Please support Lily Films by logging onto www.thefutureoffood.com to purchase the entire 88 minute film and ensure that this vital message is spread throughout the world.”
